We are very sad to learn that Urdrü, the phenomenal annunciator of the Sproutbau Republic, has passed away on October 4th. We remember his generosity, humor and his good natured approach to putting up with our chaotic creativeness during his stay on the Sproutbau grounds. Without him the start of the project wouldn´t have been as passionate and as stimulating. Thank you so much, you will stay in our memories!

We extend our best wishes to his family and friends.

Letztes Jahr hatten wir das große Glück, dass die Kleingeldprinzessin (Support Lenasingt und Ich und mein Tiger) großzügigerweise für den Sproutbau ein Soli-Konzert gegeben hat. Der Abend war ein voller Erfolg - und ohne diese finanzielle Starthilfe hätten wir es anfangs wesentlich schwerer gehabt.

Wir freuen uns daher, dass Dota jetzt wieder nach Bremen kommt! Für alle die sie gerne wiedersehen wollen und für alle die sie damals verpasst haben, die Kleingeldprinzessin tritt am Freitag, dem 18.4. um 20.00 Uhr im Lagerhaus auf.

Sproutbau Movie - a film by Ricardo Cedeño Montaña.

During the summer of 2007 the Sproutbau project brought life to an empty multi-storey building doomed for demolition. Artists, architects, visionaries and creative people of all kinds moved into the 110 apartment units to realize their ideas around alternative living, intentional communities and visual arts. When Ricardo Cedeño Montaña heard about the project he decided to follow the work and life of some of the participants with a film camera. This coming weekend the finished movie will be publicly screened for the first time.

Joined by the project team and some active members of the Sproutbau, Ricardo will be present to receive questions - and of course applause. A discussion about the movie, Sproutbau and upcoming projects will be made possible after the screening.

This cute earthling is Friedemann, aka Bärbel. He finally managed to emerge from the safe womb of his mother and is just as friendly as his name suggests. He was born on March 12th at 9.13 PM after a cesarian. Meike is doing well and looks, even after all the stress, just radiant. We congratulate the parents, the grandmothers and grandfathers and the grand grandfather, who came to hospital today to see what 1/8 part is of his.

Both, Meike and Friedemann, need to stay at the hospital for 4 to 6 days. You can go and visit if you like. They are at the Diako, in Gröpelingen.

Over the weekend of February 16/17th Linda stopped by in Bremen to pick up her paintings. Together we went to see the remains of the Sproutbau. There was little left but a huge field of rubbles, which was especially sad for Linda, as she had hoped to get an idea of what the building looked like and where her paintings were installed.

We climbed over the many stones to the one room that fiercefully kept standing. To our surprise this was also the only room we never could get into while the Sproutbau was still alive and standing.

There were tables and chairs in the secret room. And someone had left a scarf. Now the only thing still unrevealed is whether there existed 7 hidden storage rooms in the basement that were full of collected items. Some rumors just have to live on...

On Saturday 19th a group of Sproutfarmers gathered to take a look at the rubbles of Sproutbau. It was an eerie sight seing the building have standing, half in debris.

Despite the surrounding fence we could get in easily. The garden and garage were all gone, as well as house 46 and part of house 48.

The have ripped off the white asbesto pannels from the walls, they have etched out the floor tiles. All asbesto crab was collected in huge white plastic bags.

Still you could walk up all the floors. What you see on the photo above is the seventh floor, coming right out of the stairway. To the right is Mr. Dohm´s old apartment, while to the left you see this hole into what has formerly been the café.

A group of us then visited Mr. Dohms in his new apartment. He has settled in now, but believes to be fully ready with everything around Easter. He promised to hold an Easter party. By then all the remains of Sproutbau will have be gone.

Sproutbau´s last resident has finally left the broken palace and moved into his new flat. The past month he had spent there without any comfort of hot water and radiation, but with almost nightly visitors roaming the building in search for useful materials. Buten & Binnen had a report on it last Tuesday. You can watch it here. Scroll all the way down!

Also here is a newspaper clip from the Bremer Anzeiger. My favorite part is this little snippet:

He gained new hope through an art project in September . Architects and artists turned his building into the "Sproutbau" so that life was returning. "Those were really great young people", says Dohms. "They should have established a students´hostel way earlier..."

park(ing) day in bremen

The Sprouts do parking! PARK(ing) day is an international event initiated by Rebar, where public parkings spots are "leased" from the city and transformed into parks. In Bremen a group from the Sproutcrew grabbed Sproutbau leftovers and squeezed it into a car.

We then parked the car Thursday night at Violenstraße, a side road to the big traffic point Domsheide. Our visitor from Denmark, Anders, blocked another parking spot with his graffiti painted (Hippie) Citroen.

Next day we would get up early to feed the parking meter and build the park. The design followed the materials we had. The floor was covered with mulch and grass. Plants and vegetables made good decorations. We brought a parasol in case it would rain and a fancy lawn mower to use as the required vehicle.

Local TV station Buten & Binnen later decided to use this action for their daily weather forecast.

Shunka was brave enough to say the prewritten text into the camera. She and Daniel were also interviewed by the crew of the Public Channel (Offener Kanal).

The event drew positive attention from pedestrians and bike folks. There were no complaints from people searching a parking spot. And there was no interferences from the police. Even the meter maids ignored us intentionally. All in all a friendly, peaceful event.

In the end we gave away plants to people walking by. We cleaned up the space and took home some vegetables. The birdhouse though remains to this very day on top of the traffic light.

It was the deal from the beginning that after Sproutbau Heidi, Ingmar and Mordechai would move on to the Egestorff Stiftung, a home for the elderly, where they have a huge willow and many animals. They now share place with 7 other goats, sheep and bulls.

Ingmar is making new enemies. It looks like he feels at home.

They are all well and healthy - and very missed...

In Buffalo, New York, Linda Anderson has been painting on a huge walk through installation for the pillars of Sproutbau. She mailed the wrapped paintings in time: but it took a fierceful (and charming) Mia U. to claim them from custom, where they originally intended a delivery right after the Betonale. When we unwrapped the paintings they still carried the smell of fresh acrylics/oil.

It was an adventure to hang them. Linda had sent us instructions that were perfect: but what she couldn´t have taken into account was the heavy wind, the rain, the fresh graffiti. All forces that made it difficult to stick to the plan.

We then changed the settings and put the paintings up in an order we thought still gave them a vibrant look and where they wouldn´t be food for mean weather.

In the end it was a great success. People would curiously stop and examine the exterior gallery. We were afraid the paintings would get damaged but they were treated respectfully and with awe. Especially children liked to race through the art and cheered the look of the brightful colors.

white flat

A flat in all shades of white. An inhabitant who hardly ever talks. Where she comes from, nobody knows.

She starts cleaning, a thorough removal of all traces, strict and determined. Everything gets covered with a layer of paint – floor, table, books, pictures, walls – everything. Is this a way to get rid off memories? What you cannot see does not exist. She paints towards the state of purest white and innocence. A story about the attempt of forgetting.

White to the very last detail: She drinks milk, water, white wine. She eats pasta, rice, white bread, cream cheese, asparges. She wears a white skirt, white blouse, white socks and white shoes. (Only her lipstick is of a bright red.)

She doesn’t like people. Hardly ever she tries to socialize; usually she prefers to retire to the white silence of her flat.

Patricia Lambertus site-specific installation "Sohies Garten" is a world grown from wallpaper, inhabitating a swanlake, a palace garden and a meadow.

The motives were inspired by wallpaper found in the apartment. Several other wallpapers from Sproutbau and elsewhere completed the energetic montage. Here the wall fabrics of former residents come together to form the garden of an imaginative person. You set your foot in like into a delicate dip and spend a visual fest in patterns, structures, colors and shades.

In her short career as a "Zen-Ziege" (zen goat) Heidi has gained immense popularity not only among kids. Her naughty, nosy character wins you over. She loves to climb up people in search for food. Infact: in search of food Heidi has been caught in strange and rather hilarious situations.

She has been the focus of media attention and will also be starring in a short movie about stairways. Here you see her pictured in the BILD Zeitung:

Heidi is so popular and called after that we tend to think all the goats believe they are named "Heidi". Not that they would listen anyway.

Less popular but well liked is Mordechai. His cuteness factor is high. More down to earth than Heidi, Mordechai usually waits patiently for his turn. You often find him sitting on the radiator catching sunlight. One of his obsessions are cats. He dislikes them. Everytime he sees a cat he blows his nose like a trumpet. Then he jumps away and hides.

Ingmar is named after the late director Ingmar Bergman. Coincidentally he has a torn soul and split character. Shy with humans Ingmar nonetheless bosses his colleagues around to make sure he gets his food. Never afraid of a good fight he and Mordechai are wrestling partners. Poor Mordechai never wins.

The three of them share a 30 m² basement apartment with an attached garden. One side of the apartment is filled with wooden pieces and an armchair, where visitors get to go into a swing mood and relax. The palettes are where they sleep at night and rest at day. They have an area in the back filled with straw that they like to use for sanitary purposes.

The other half of the apartment has been decorated with a huge poster showing a Swiss alpine landscape. We do not know whether that makes them feel more at home but occasionally Mordechai likes to chew on the wallpaper.

Only two weeks after taking territory in the garden there were no bushes left. Here Heidi and Ingmar are sneaking out noses waiting for someone to bring them fresh branches.

If they are not sneaking their noses out in the garden you will find them doing the very same thing up at the front door...

Mysterious things happen in the hallway of House Nr. 46. The voice of a woman screaming eaks around the corner. Between level one and two a hole has appeared in the wall. Peeking through it, you can watch a short film of a white clad man doing business while staircases are collapsing.

The Scalaloge Hartmut Vogel is the creator of this darling project. Look out at the Betonale for his upcoming talk on the use of staircases in films.

Our visiting archaeologist Sonja led a group of Sproutbau residents and local children on a simulated dig on the Sproutbau grounds. First the area was secured by the "Kampfmittelräumungsdienst" to make sure we are not going to hit into war remains, but who also located interesting spots to dig for us.

The findings were collected in bags and catalogued on paper. What do these wacky little things like chewinggum paper and plastic tell us about former residents? That and the whole collection of findings you will see presented at the Betonale, 31.8.-2.9.

Apart from being the sweetest couple Dan & Trish from the Happy Band are superb musicians who stunned the audience with a delightful performance. They were charming, they were goofy, they were rocking the crowd. With the support of a laptop (normally the Happy Band of Japan is a group of 5!) and self-created instruments from Sproutbau findings they managed to show a great diversity. We are planning on bringing them back onstage for the Betonale. Don´t miss that!

Linda Anderson is participating in Sproutbau in spirit. While we are working inside and outside the building Linda prepares her paintings in her garage in Buffalo. She designs the Outdoor Gallery where the paintings will be attached to pillars and walls. People can walk through the pillars and when passing by the compositions change with the movement.

We were giving Linda measurements to the walls and pillars and in return she will send us in the paintings and directions how and where to install them.

There is a surprise included in each painting: come and see yourself at the Betonale! (31.8.-2.9.)

On Saturday was the grand opening of the Sproutbau postoffice, the walkable mailbox. Riikka and Katrin created this important spot as a communication center where people leave each other messages and notifications. This room is for introductional purposes of the participants. Here you let people know where you live and what you do in Sproutbau.

The newest Sproutbau participants are Ingmar, Heidi and Mordechai, who so far have been patient about their situation and are slowly getting adjusted to the environment. They live in their own apartment and have a garden in front of their door.

For those who are worried about their further fate: after Sproutbau they will move to the Egestorff Stiftung and will be buddies to the goats and cows there.

We had full room on Saturday night for our Sproutbau benefit soli and it was a great evening. All in all not just the performers were the stars - the audience was amicable and outgoing as well. The Wehrschloss is a great location for such happening.

An manchen Tagen muss man den Sproutbau gegen alles mögliche verteidigen. Zum Beispiel gegen die Entfernung von Stromzählern. Hier seht ihr einen der leergeräumten, aber wieder ordentlich verplompten Kästen. Für Heute ist uns also der Saft ausgegangen, aber keine Sorge, bis Freitag haben wir alles wieder im Griff.

There will be two days each week designated for the Sproutuniversity. Either in the forenoon, the afternoon or in the evening. The Sproutuniversity includes workshops and seminars from the participants (Open Space Method) and seminars and talks from external speakers. We were wondering what times would you think would fit best with this concept. A strong argumente pro weekends is that it might be easier for external speakers to come and give a seminar - as well as for external visitors wanting to take part. A strong argument pro weekdays is that weekends are often used for other occupations and events, so that this would interfere with the University.

Who we also have to thank is the crew from the Oslebshausen prison JVA who have this fabulous EU sponsored program - computerrecycling and -refurbishment. Discarded computers will be recycled and repaired and then donated to non-profit organizations. This way we were able to establish our Sproutbau office.

By now we have notified most applicants. There are still a few pending projects, depending on "spending". Perhaps we can work things out. We may already have stretched our financial limits, but we are still optimistic. We believe the power of people will make Sproutbau a great project, a vital experience for all.

We want to thank everyone who has applied. There were so many great ideas and people, it was hard to make a decision. What it proves though again and again, is that there are many people out there with a desire to re-think living conditions, people who have ideas regarding intentional communities (and who already live alternative life-styles), people who demand space for creative processes and are ready to fill that in.

There has been some unfortunate vandalism recently that has had serious effect on the quality of appartments we already had chosen to live and to work in. We´ve been asked when and how the Sproutbau will be demolished later this fall. Is there an exact date? Will it be detonated? Will there be an implosion?

There is no exact date yet. Rumors say it the house will go by late September. And it won´t go the dramatic way! Instead they will have excavators and wrecking balls working for weeks on the conrete and eat it away. I have witnessed this process last year and it is painfully slow.

20 people roaming around Sproutbau. We begann the tour by showing some of the communal space and from there entering the garden. Sproutbau is a massive building, best seen from here, not really that high but wide spread and eerie with so many balconies where you don´t know whether someone still lives behind there. The houses holds back the breath of a recently abandoned person. People are usually surprised at the green surroundings and the rather spacious appartments.

We moved on from there entering the left side building, walking all way up to our coming "Lounge". This is a top level veranda space for chilling out, or discussions, evening entertainment. The weird architecture makes it possible to have balcony conversations with neighbours facing each other. The spiral staircase got praise.

Next stop was the middle building that we consider our working field. Here people will receive enough space to work on their individual projects. We showed different types of appartments, including the roof top for the cinema. Finally everyone gathered at the Sproutbau headquarter for a cup of coffee and cookies to aks questions and introduce themselves.

Wir stellen uns das mit dem Sproutbau folgendermaßen vor: Menschen arbeiten und wohnen für einen Monat lang an ihren eigenen und gemeinsamen Projektideen, die aus dem Spektrum einerseits des idealen Wohnens (Thema Wohnutopien), andererseits des nachhaltigen und autonomen Wohnens liegen. Für uns beinhaltet das, dass die Teilnehmer idealerweise die ganze Zeit über am Projekt teilnehmen, weil sich so am ehesten Kooperationen/Entwicklungen/Vernetzungen ergeben und es "sprießt". Nur wenn eine Rauminstallation oder Idee so überzeugend hinsichtlich unserer Kriterien ist, dass wir gar nicht Nein sagen können, würden wir auch mit einer zeitweiligen Abwesenheit des Teilnehmers leben können :).

Wir bekommen zur Zeit viele Bewerbungen von interessanten Menschen, die gerne Räume umdekorieren möchten. Der leere Raum regt verständlicherweise immer wieder zu kühnen Gestaltungsideen an. Wir möchten das aber gerne mit einer Fragestellung verknüpfen. Wie können wir uns in unserem Leben so einrichten, dass wir weder Energiereserven vollends ausschöpfen und betrachtliche Spuren in unserer Umwelt hinterlassen, noch uns dauerhaft abhängig machen von externen Serviceleistungen. Hier sind Experimente gefragt, die unsere Art und Weise zu leben durchleuchten und Alternativen anstreben. Beispiele wären z.B., wie es eine Teilnehmerin plant, ein Nutztier auf dem Balkon bzw. der Veranda zu halten, hausinneren Ackerbau zu betreiben, Solarduschen einzurichten, die Toilette mit Grauwasser zu betreiben, Gemeinschaftsräume zu konzipieren - und das alles mit künstlerisch/kreativem Geschick zu verbinden, sodass eine aktive Beteiligung am eigenen Lebensumfeld geschieht. Natürlich können sich in dieser kurzen Zeit viele nachhaltige Projekte nicht in der Realität verwirklichen lassen. Doch der Sproutbau ist vor allem eine Plattform für neue, beziehungsweise schon lange bekannte aber wenig genutzte Lebens-/Wohnutopien, ein sich gegenseitiger Befähigungskasten, ein Ort, von dem aus es weiter geht.

Im Vordergrund steht die Gemeinschaft, das Leben des Einzelnen darin (inklusive Rückzugsmöglichkeit/Teilnahme) und wie man sich angesichts unserer erwarteten Zukunft organisiert. Wir wollen Themen global diskutieren, lokal integrieren und uns sozial nicht verlieren.

Für neue, aberwitzige, funktionsunfähige aber interessante, augenöffnende und nachdenklich machende Ideen sind wir sehr offen!

How we envision the Sproutbau is to have people live here for a month and work together on their own or common projects. Ideally those projects should focus on the field of sustainable, self-sufficient living. Participants are asked to spend the whole month in Sproutbau as we assume this is the way to best foster cooperations, developments and networking - so to "let it sprout"!

We are receiving a lot of applications from interesting people wanting to alter
rooms/appartments. Empty space is always a playground for exiting design ideas. But we´d like to link that with a deeper question. How do we want to arrange ourselves in our lives to not exploit our environment, to not make us totally dependable on external services? We are seeking to experiment with ideas that are putting our normal way to live to test and we are trying to live out alternatives. For example, would it be possible to keep a milk producing animal like the goat on a veranda? Can we combine solar techniques with creative designs, to install solar flowers? What would it take to construct common areas in a concrete building like the Sproutbau, that makes it both working for the residents, but not working on them? How can art benefit daily life? How do we organize ourselves with respect to the future?

Of course establishing sustainable ideas in a temporary project seems to be an oxymoron. Yet the focus of Sproutbau is to serve as a plattform for those ideas, to empower creative people with the tools, the knowledge to move on, to move further into the sowed direction.

We want to discuss themes globally, integrate them locally, and work to not lose ourselves socially.

Ein Sommer im Beton

Ein leer stehendes Hochhaus am Rande Bremens, das auf den Abriss wartet, sucht ZwischennutzerInnen. Sie sollen Ideen für eine Neuinterpretation des Raums mitbringen und Lust auf eine Ziege auf der Dachterrasse haben.

In Bremen Tenever veranschaulichen gigantische Betonklötze mit Hunderten von verlassenen Wohnungen das Dilemma einer sozialen Stadtplanung, die nie so recht aufging. Nummer 46-52 steht mittendrin und kurz vor dem Abriss. Aber bevor im Herbst die Mauern fallen, sollen sie noch einmal bemalt, belichtet, belebt werden. Im August wird der entmietete Block zum "Sproutbau" - einem "Sprössling" für neue, nachhaltige Wohnutopien.

Einen Monat lang können hier Künstler, Handwerker und andere Visionäre ihre Vorstellungen von genutztem Raum ausleben und austauschen. Dafür stehen insgesamt 110 verlassene Wohnungen als Experimentierfeld zur Verfügung. Es wird unter anderem Installationen, morgendliche "Soap Operas" aus dem Lautsprecher und eine Ziege auf dem Dach geben. Die Block-WG ist international: Ein Este will Wände bemalen, eine Finnin organisiert die Volksküche und ein Bremer Landwirt wird den dazugehörigen Garten bestellen. Wer noch einziehen und mitspinnen möchte, kann sich bis zum 24. Juni auf der Homepage www.sproutbau.de informieren und bewerben.

Die Idee des "Sproutbaus" stammt von der freien Künstlerin Christina Vogelsang, die sich bereits im letzten Jahr mit dem von den Bewohnern Tenevers gestalteten Kunstevent Teneverparadies vor Ort engagierte. Zusammen mit Olaf Clausing, Michael Ziehl, Valentin Werner, Annika Schmeding und dem "Autonomen Architektur Atelier" bildet sie das "Team N.", das in einer der leer stehenden Wohnungen bereits sein Büro aufgeschlagen hat. Hier laufen die Fäden für die Organisation des Projekts zusammen. Die Gewoba hat das Gebäude bereitwillig zur Verfügung gestellt.

Nummer 46-52 ist nicht der erste Block sein, der im Zuge des Teneveraner Rückbaus abgerissen wird. Aber er verabschiedet sich mit einem großen Finale. Vom 31. August bis 1. September sollen in einer "Betonale" die Ergebnisse des Gesamtprojekts vorgestellt und gefeiert werden.

TENEVER. Eine merkwürdige, bedrückende Stille geht von dem Wohnkomplex Neuwieder Straße 46 -52 in Osterholz Tenever aus. Von den meisten Mietern schon verlassen, ragen die zum Abriss verdammten Betonkolosse weitgehend verwaist in den Bremer Himmel. Doch bald soll neues Leben dort einkehren. In dem Haus an der Neuwieder Straße 48 bewohnen nur noch zwei Parteien das Hochhaus, eine mehrköpfige Familie und ein älterer, alleinstehender Herr. Auch sie sollen bald in eines der umliegenden Gebäude umsiedeln, damit die teilweise stark heruntergekommene Wohnanlage abgerissen werden kann. Doch bevor das soweit ist, erwacht eines der Häuser, der Block Nummer 48, für kurze Zeit noch einmal zu neuem Leben.Im Rahmen des Projektes "Sproutbau" sollen sich im August hier Menschen niederlassen, die einen Monat lang gemeinschaftlich miteinander leben wollen. Am Sonnabend veranstalteten die Organisatoren des Projekts eine erste Hausbegehung mit potenziellen Mitbewohnern. Die Initiatoren des Projekts, oder das "Team N.", wie sich die Gruppe nennt, sind neben Christina Vogelsang, Annika Schmeding und Olaf Clausing, die über den Verein "Quartier" oder ähnliche Sozialeinrichtungen schon mehrere Projekt in Tenever betreut oder organisiert haben, auch Oliver Hasemann, Daniel Schnier und Alexander Kutsch vom Autonomen Architektur Atelier (AAA), die sich aufgrund der architektonischen Besonderheiten des Wohnkomplexes für das Projekt interessieren. "Die Idee ist, hier eine Wohngemeinschaft entstehen zu lassen, die sich auf der Grundlage individueller Ideen und der Gegebenheiten des Hauses entsprechend organisiert und miteinander in dem Haus lebt", erklärt Christina Vogelsang. Einzige Voraussetzung: Jeder, der in das Haus einzieht, muss etwas für das Allgemeinwohl in die Wohngemeinschaft einbringen und möglichst eine Idee entwickeln, die zu einer nachhaltigen Nutzung bestimmt ist. "Unter anderem wollen wir eine Volksküche einrichten, die für die Versorgung der Bewohner zuständig ist", erzählt Vogelsang. Darüber hinaus seien jedoch auch Interessenten aus anderen Bereichen, wie Handwerker, Techniker oder Zukunftsvisionäre gefragt, die sich vorstellen können, für einen Monat in einem fast leerstehenden Hochhaus zu wohnen. "Bisher haben sich schon einige Leute mit guten Ideen bei uns gemeldet", erzählt Christina Vogelsang. "Wir haben sogar auch einige Anfragen aus dem Ausland, was uns natürlich besonders freut, weil es dem Projekt eine internationale Note gibt. "Claudia Junker und Niko Wolf, die aus Ottersberg zur Besichtigung gekommen sind, kennen sich mit alternativ geführten, gemeinschaftlichen Lebensformen aus. "Wir wohnen zusammen mit 18 Leuten in einem alten Bahnhof im Ottersberg", erzählt die 24-jährige Kunstpädagogikstudentin Claudia Junker, die schon seit dreieinhalb Jahren in dem alten Bahnhof lebt. Zwar habe sie bisher noch keine genaue Vorstellung davon, was sie in die Gemeinschaft einbringen könnte. "Ich finde das Projekt aber sehr spannend und wollte mir zur Inspiration einfach schon mal das Gebäude und die Räumlichkeiten angucken", meint sie. Einen etwas ausgereifteren Plan hat die 25-jährige Celine, die Umwelttechnik an der Universität Hamburg studiert. "Ich habe mir überlegt, einen Solar- und Wärmespeicher zu entwickeln", erzählt sie. Da sie damit jedoch noch in der Planung stecke, wolle sie lieber erstmal nicht zu viel verraten. "Nicht, dass mich mein Professor nachher noch darauf festnagelt und es dann nachher nicht klappt. "Anfang August sollen mindestens 40 Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner in den Häuserblock einziehen, der dank der Gewoba noch für einen zusätzlichen Monat an das Wasser- und Stromnetz angeschlossen bleiben wird. "Allerdings haben wir in der Zeit leider kein warmes Wasser, aber vielleicht entwickelt ja jemand noch eine Idee dafür", sagt Vogelsang. not top notch but raw and ready!

Yes, we all know Sproutbau is not top luxury, but in what conditions are the appartments - and will there be water/electricity?

Appartments
The appartments are worn down but allright. There are pvc floors, sometimes strange wall papers and other times strange smells. We are reserving the best apparmtents for to live in, so actually those are quite nice. They have fluent water (only cold water!) and electricity and everyone will receive their own door lock to secure your belongings. Each appartment has a balcony and occasionally there is a stove.

Studios
What we call studios will be your work place. These appartments are in lesser shape but offer you a separation of work/living space.

Furniture
We are planning to get everyone a sleeping place (bed, mattrass), a chair, a table, the most basic things. There will be a furniture room where you can pick up other pieces to accommodate your needs. We plan to have more comfort in the common areas, like the eating place and the Lounge. What you need to bring yourself is your own bedding (sleeping bag, pillow) and whatever you think you can´t do without.

Garden Area
We have our own garden! At the very moment it looks quite awful as they just removed the playground. Also since the building is empty people from the area
started removing fences and wood pieces for their own purposes (and who could blame them) which makes the place look . Anyone interested in gardening and/or designing a temporary garden, this will be your field!

important! 2 major changes

The dates for the "Betonale" have changed!!! We are extending the stay in Sproutbau and moved the final presentation to August 31st to September 1st!
Now we have a whole month to work on our projects.

As we are slow spreading the words internationally we also gave an extension to the application deadline. Write to us no later than June 24th! But be aware that from now on we will hold regular meetings to accept our first residents. Meaning the sooner you write, the sooner you will know if you can move in.

We already had quite a few applications and it is exiting to read about project ideas and to imagine them come alive in the Sproutbau. Infact there are two ideas I am totally enthralled with. One thing that is noticable though is that so far most projects have little to do with autonomous or sustainable living - which is why we want to encourage more people to focus on those aspects! How could you express your utopia artistically? Our interest is to see in what ways we can use the given structures of a multi-storey building to make it more functional for us. We are talking solar power, green fields within the building - ideas that foster communication between neighbours and cooperations regarding food, transportation, etx. As an example: someone from our team plans to have a goat on her veranda. Not only are goats supposed to increase your life expectancy (yes, they make you happy!), but they also supply you with milk. Natural food suppliance is a big factor when discussing alternative life-styles.

What kind of alternatives would you want to integrate in your life?

Für die Flaneure dieser Welt, die am liebsten in Berlin ihrer Pfade wandeln, gibt es hier eine Chance diesen "Walk" einem größeren Publikum zu präsentieren. Die Macher vom Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien schreiben den Wettbewerb „Mein liebster Spaziergang – Mein schönster Spaziergang“ aus.

"Im Rahmen der vom 1. September bis 14. Oktober 2007 stattfindenden Ausstellung mit dem Titel „ WALK! Spazierengehen als Kunstform – Über die allmähliche Verfertigung der Gedanken beim Gehen “ im Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien soll das Phänomen des Spazierengehens nicht nur künstlerisch, wissenschaftlich oder analytisch betrachtet werden, sondern auch ganz praktisch: Wir suchen daher den liebsten oder schönsten Spaziergang von Berlin! "

jane´s walk

The late Jane Jacobs, author and urban activist, is honored in her home town Toronto with the introduction of the official "Jane Jacobs Day" on May 4th. Following today is the "Jane´s Walk", a tour through some of Toronto´s neighborhoods. The idea behind that is to "... reinforce her idea of walkable, dense, compact and diverse neighbourhoods as the hallmarks of a healthy city. These characteristics help knit together the people of a neighborhood into a strong and resourceful community."

Jane Jacobs is the acclaimed author of "The death and life of great american Cities", the first of fundamental books on cities, on how they work, how they change. She saw the urban world as a complex place where you couldn't think in straight lines, you had to think in contexts.

dan on a hot concrete roof

Even that we have evaluated the whole house there are still many corners to be discovered. The building seems to be a layered multitude of boxes, all in different sizes. There are unexpected levels and weird gaps. We made Dan walk out on the roof to pose for us. He took a huge yellow ball with him that rolled away and fell through one of the gaps, unfortunately scaring the last remaining neighbour, landing on his balcony. (Imagine having the "sun" coming down on you!) The proof is though: connections can be made easily. You don´t neccessarily need the stairway to walk between levels. The roof is hot. And we still have appartments to offer.

This is not a top level roof, it sits on top of level 4, almost like a bridge between buildings. After buckets of rain you can call it a pool, but we haven´t seen it used this way. What we plan to do is building a roof top cinema, using the wall as a screen. Can you imagine lazy nights under the stellar sky watching interesting documentaries or entertaining movies?

We are looking for a person or group interested in hosting movie nights. Anyone out there wanting to be a film curator?

Der Stadtteil Tenever liegt an der östlichen Peripherie, 11km vom Bremer Zentrum entfernt. Es handelt sich um eine Großwohnsiedlung in der Bauweise der 70er Jahre: “Urbanität durch Dichte”. Tenever befindet sich in einer zwiespältigen Situation zwischen Abriss und Modernisierung. Viele der rund 8.000 Bewohner sind von materieller Armut betroffen, es herrscht ein internationales Flair.

Das Haus selbst liegt an einer wenig befahrenen Straße. Auf seiner Hinterseite befindet sich ein Garten, dem sich gleich weitläufige Grünflächen und ein kleiner Bach anschließen. Ein Kinderbauernhof liegt in der Nähe, ebenso wie ein kleines Parzellengebiet mit den Internationalen Gärten.

Autobahnanschluss (A27), Busanbindung (Linie 25), Badesee und Sportanlagen sind vorhanden...
